The caretaker government would no longer be confined to mere day-to-day affairs
In a joint session of the parliament on Wednesday, an amendment to the Election Act 2017 was passed, bestowing the caretaker government with unprecedented authority to make decisions regarding existing bilateral and multilateral agreements and projects.
The Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Murtaza Javed Abbasi, signaling a significant shift in the country's political landscape.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had taken the initiative, announcing on Sunday the introduction of the amendment to grant the caretaker setup rights comparable to those of an elected government.
In a statement to Dawn, the PML-N supreme leader's spokesperson, Muhammad Zubair, emphasized that the caretaker government would no longer be confined to mere day-to-day affairs until elections were held. Instead, they would now wield the authority to make crucial decisions akin to those made by an elected government.
